The Red Bird area of Clay County offers some of the most spectacular natural scenery in eastern Kentucky. Named for the Red Bird River - a 34-mile tributary of the South Fork Kentucky River - this region borders the Daniel Boone National Forest and the Redbird Wildlife Management Area, making it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.
About the Red Bird Area
The Red Bird River winds through the eastern portion of Clay County, forming part of the boundary with Leslie County before joining Goose Creek at Oneida. The river takes its name from local legend, and the area has been home to generations of Appalachian families who have lived off the land.
Much of the Red Bird area falls within or borders the Daniel Boone National Forest, with approximately 61,000 acres of the Redbird Purchase Unit located in Clay County. This federal land provides endless opportunities for recreation while preserving the natural character of the region.
